Pres. John F. Kennedy’s “We Choose to go the Moon” Video and Speech, given September 12th, 1962, at Rice Stadium, Houston, Texas, NASA Archive Library, https://er.jsc.nasa.gov/seh/ricetalk.htm,  last accessed March 31st, 2019.

This speech is the perfect demonstration of the feelings the US and the Soviet Union had for each other during the Cold War. President Kennedy didn’t want the Soviet Union to be ahead in the space program. He wanted the US to take the lead, and he believed that putting a man in the moon was the best way to show America’s superiority. He promised that the US would put a man in the moon before the end of the decade. It was possible: On July 20th, 1969, the Apollo XI mission finally put Neil Armstrong as the first man to step on the moon. That’s the power of this speech: It perfectly captures the spirit of mistrust and animosity that existed between US and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and the power a leader has to print a vision into his or her country.

Pres. Ronald Reagan’s “Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down This Wall!” speech, delivered June 12th, 1987 at Brandenburg Gate, West Berlin, Germany, Encyclopedia Britannica, https://www.britannica.com/story/mr-gorbachev-tear-down-this-wall-reagans-berlin-speech, last accessed April 17th, 2019.

During his second administration as President of the United States, Mr. Ronald Reagan visited divided Berlin (like his predecessor John F. Kennedy in 1963), to deliver a message of hope to its inhabitants. In this speech, he posed a direct challenge to Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev: To open the Iron Curtain and let Germany re-unify. This was one of the few steps by world leaders that led to the reunification of Germany, the dismantling of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.

Secondary Sources

HyperHistory, https://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/History_n2/a.html, last accessed May 1st, 2019.  This page features an extensive record of what has happened around the decades, making special emphasis in the 1945-2000 period. It is divided into decades, and for each year, it chronicles at least one major war or conflict, one historical event, one movie, and one book. It does so for every year in that time lapse, and that’s why it’s very useful as a source.

History of the People, http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/, last accessed May 1st, 2019. This is perhaps the most complete, accurate source I have used in my investigation. It is similar to the previous source, but it’s completer and more detailed. It features a separate sheet for each year, featuring historical news, sports, culture, movies, sports, fashion, the car of the year, births, deaths, Oscars, Nobel Prizes, and the cost of things. This source is from where I’ve gotten most of my information and decided how to sort it out.

History of the World By Luke Mastin, http://www.lukemastin.com/history/by_date_8.html, accessed May 10th, 2019. Another very effective source. Like the previous two, it features a compendium of the postwar era. A major difference is that this short guide seems to focus mainly on historical events, while movies, sports, music and culture are relegated to second frame. Regardless of this, the page lists some of the most important historical events from the postwar era in rapid-fire succession.

“The Postwar Era: 1945-1980”, US History, Khan Academy, https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/us-history/postwarera, accessed May 10th, 2019. This website is perhaps one of the most limited I’ve used in my research. To start, it focuses on the 1945-1980 period, not featuring much of the 80s, the 90s, and the year 2000. It also focuses principally on US history. Despite this, important historical events such as the baby boom, the creation of NATO, the Korean War, and the civil rights movement are featured there. This source has proven to be as effective as the three previous. Together, all of this websites create a perfect panorama of the postwar era.
